I promise it's worth it.
Hold your eye-rolls. I know ~drink water with lemon~ is like #1 on every single list of how to eat healthier and has been since… oh I don’t know, 2001? But just hear me out. Even as a nutritionist, I had such a hard time incorporating this step into my morning routine. Partially because all the health claims made about it online seemed simply too good to be true and partially because, well, I kept forgetting to!
Two weeks ago, I decided to make a commitment to myself to start every morning with a glass of warm or room temperature with lemon and see if it was actually worth the hype.
Spoiler alert: It was.
And then some.
Here’s what went down:
1. I HAD MORE ENERGY AND CAFFEINE BECAME MORE EFFECTIVE
Starting your day with a glass of lemon water actually makes your morning caffeine fix more effective. First off, in the morning you are dehydrated and coffee is a diuretic (aka it dehydrates you further). By starting your day with a glass of lemon water, you kickstart your hydration and set yourself up for a healthy day. Second of all, it is really helpful for your liver and aids in detoxification. When your body is actively and efficiently ridding itself of toxins, we feel way more energized, happier and less sluggish. Rather than your body relying on only caffeine to jumpstart your morning, the lemon water gives you an extra boost.
2. BLOATING DISAPPEARED
This was a pleasant surprise. Not only did I feel so energized, my digestion was working perfectly. Bloating takes place when your body has a hard time breaking down food properly. Lemon water is a serious digestive tonic. I had zero stomach aches all week, my digestion ran smoothly and my bloating was kept to an all-time low. 3. MY HORMONAL BREAKOUT WAS MIA
This was the biggest surprise of all. Around that time of the month I have become used to getting a minor breakout. I figured it was simply a package deal. After drinking lemon water for just one week, my skin cleared and I didn’t get ONE pimple. Seriously – not one. Since lemon water boosts your liver function, helps your body detox and helps alkalise your body, your way less likely to get breakouts. If this doesn’t have you running to your kitchen to start this daily hack, I don’t know what will.
